Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) is a crystalline material used as a laser medium in solid-state laser systems. The triply ionized neodymium [Nd(III)] dopant replaces a small portion of yttrium atoms within the crystal structure due to their similar size, enabling the laser activity within the crystal.

Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) is a synthetic crystal used as a laser medium in solid-state laser systems. The neodymium ion [Nd(III)] acts as the active dopant and replaces a portion of yttrium ions in the crystal lattice due to their similar atomic size.
This neodymium element is responsible for generating laser activity within the crystal. The Nd:YAG laser operates at a wavelength of 1064 nm, allowing it to reach deeper layers of skin tissue compared to many other laser types. In Q-switched mode, it produces two wavelengths: an infrared beam at 1064 nm and a secondary 532 nm wavelength, which is useful for more superficial skin concerns.
Q-switching refers to the technique used to produce high-energy laser pulses in very short bursts for controlled treatment.
Before treatment, proper diagnosis must be confirmed by the clinician, especially when treating pigmented lesions, to ensure conditions such as melanoma are not overlooked.
Patients are required to wear protective eyewear such as goggles or opaque shields throughout the procedure. The laser handpiece is placed directly on the skin, and the treatment is delivered through controlled laser pulses.
Many patients describe each pulse as a light snapping sensation similar to an elastic band against the skin. A topical anesthetic may be used in some cases, although it is not always necessary. Skin cooling is applied throughout treatment to enhance comfort, and some devices include integrated cooling systems.
Immediately after the procedure, an ice pack may be applied to the treated area. Patients are advised to avoid rubbing or exfoliating the area for several days, and a protective dressing may be used when necessary. Sun protection is essential during the healing period to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
The Nd:YAG laser can be used for a range of skin concerns, including:
Vascular Lesions
The laser targets hemoglobin (red pigment) within blood vessels. It is commonly used for vascular conditions and vein removal. Typical settings may include a 50-millisecond pulse duration and fluence levels ranging from 150–250 J/cm².
Pigmented Lesions
Nd:YAG can also be used to reduce the appearance of brown spots and pigmentation concerns.
Hair Removal
Nd:YAG laser is used for hair reduction in areas such as the underarms, bikini line, face, neck, back, chest, and legs. It is generally less effective on light-colored hair (blonde or grey) but works effectively on darker hair in Fitzpatrick skin types I–III, and in some cases type IV. Caution is advised for tanned or darker skin tones due to the risk of melanin disruption, which may lead to temporary light patches (leukoderma).
Tattoo Removal
The effectiveness of tattoo removal depends on ink color and pigment depth, which influence the number of sessions required and overall treatment outcome.
Anti-Aging
Nd:YAG lasers are also used to improve the appearance of wrinkles and support skin rejuvenation in photo-aged skin.

I have done 2 Cutera IPL treatments at Sunshine Kitchener Waterloo Cosmetic Clinic and Medi Spa. My skin was much more even tone immediately after the treatments. Dr. Cathy Ding is so knowledgeable and professional. She will talk you through the process so you know exactly what to expect during the service and how to care for your skin afterwards. I am going to see Dr. Ding for my 3rd session next week and couldn't be more excited. I would 10/10 recommend this medical spa in a heartbeat.
Anytime I consider getting a procedure done I do extensive research online. Sunshine Cosmetic Clinic & Medi Spa looked like a high end medical spa with very good reviews. So I decided to do under eye filler with them. Dr. Murad was very good at the injection and patient as well. I'm extremely pleased with the results. Thanks!
